Christopher Nolan's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, is a film we've been eagerly awaiting since its announcement. It firmly sits as one of the most awaited films of 2026. As a pre-Christmas treat, a trailer has finally arrived, though it's hampered due to the platform's low-quality encoding—maybe illustrating why Nolan initially kept the trailer solely for theatrical audiences.
The Initial Look of the Stellar Ensemble
This first look showcases Matt Damon in the role of the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. During an emotional scene, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise he will return, to which he look up and question what occurs should he fail. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look of the mythical one-eyed giant, from whom sheep are Odysseus and his crew steal on their treacherous voyage.
Based upon a foundational pillar in classic storytelling, The Odyssey chronicles the epic journey of the legendary King of Ithaca. Following his victory at Troy, as told in Homer's Iliad, the king faces an extended and hazardous road home.
Mythical Encounters and a Star-Studded Lineup
Along his path, Odysseus confronts countless challenges and legendary creatures. This roster features the witch-goddess Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Despite these trials, Odysseus vows to do whatever it takes to get back to his wife and son on his home island.
The adaptation's cast is remarkably star-studded. Alongside the leading trio are Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
The classic poem has seen many reinterpretations over the years. These range from modern retellings and a late-90s dance production. There has even been a stage musical adaptation called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a multi-part album series.
A full-length preview has been highly anticipated following the project's reveal and a short teaser clip which was initially shown exclusively in theaters. That footage later made its way onto the internet soon after.
