Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
