UK Sport Chair Outlines Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Boost Great Britain Competitors For Upcoming Podium Wins.

Great Britain's Games and Paralympic Games squads need to embrace artificial intelligence and encourage greater teamwork to sustain their recent high-level results, according to the nation's elite sport agency leader Nick Webborn.

"Our nation has been an exceptionally prosperous country, and to maintain that standing or to possibly go higher, we're going to have to operate differently," Webborn remarked.

He emphasized the need to "think smarter" and "utilize technologies such as AI appropriately in sport," alongside improving cooperation among various governing organizations.

Harnessing Technology for Performance

Webborn's plan goes beyond podium ambitions. He highlighted several crucial areas where AI could provide major benefits:

  • Scouting New Talent: Using data analysis to identify potential athletes.
  • Injury Prevention: Predicting and mitigating injury hazards via biomechanical tracking.
  • Virtual Assessment: Enabling fair categorization for Paralympic athletes removing the need for extensive journeys.

This follows a recent announcement that British athletes would be offered AI-based protection against digital harassment.

Reviewing Past Olympics Results

Although Team GB won 65 medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, matching their 2012 London haul, their first-place tally of 14 saw them fall to 7th in the overall table.

"Our aim is to keep exceeding expectations," said Webborn. "It's these small details, how we turn those second places into first places."

He also commended the ParalympicsGB squad, which has consistently placed second behind China, while noting that international rivals are improving rapidly.

Competitor Welfare as a Cornerstone

In his first discussion since taking up the position, Webborn put great importance on competitor welfare and life after sport.

"Supporting the athletes who enter our elite sports system... preparing for their later life, so that the skills they learn help them become a better individual... remains critically vital to me," he affirmed.

He argued that a supportive environment doesn't just fosters superior performers but also more resilient people for the future.

Future Ambitions and Hosting Major Events

For the future, the agency is tasked with securing world-class competitions to the UK. Scheduled tournaments include the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.

The chairman further expressed a future "aspiration" to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games again, potentially around 2040.

"It was brilliant in 2012? I'd love for more members of the British public to have those moments too," Webborn said.

Webborn proposed that a future bid could be creative, perhaps involving multiple host cities like Liverpool and Manchester co-hosting.
