The Georgia congresswoman, a Republican representative from Georgia that had a significant split with the former president despite being his longtime supporter, stated on Friday she would be resigning – a move Donald Trump called "excellent news."
Greene's Statement and Trump's Response
In a detailed announcement published on online platforms, Greene remarked that "Loyalty should be a mutual relationship," noting that the legislative branch "has mostly been sidelined" during the Trump administration.
Trump, who had pulled back his endorsement of Greene in recent months after the representative challenged him on his position regarding files associated with Jeffrey Epstein, as well as on foreign policy and health policy, seemed to welcome her resignation.
"In my opinion, it's excellent news for the country. It's fantastic," Donald Trump stated to a reporter from a media organization.
When questioned if Greene had informed him, he responded, "No, it is irrelevant, you know, but I think it's positive. I believe she should be content."
Context of the Split
Despite being among the most outspoken and noticeable supporters of Trump's Make America Great Again initiative, Trump had called Greene a "traitor" and "eccentric," and declared he would endorse a rival versus her when she ran for re-election in the upcoming election.
Greene had earlier stated that she was the target of "serious dangers" after Trump withdrew his backing for her.
In her announcement, Greene repeated those threats, explaining she had faced "never-ending personal attacks, threats against her life, legal challenges, defamatory statements and falsehoods about me, that most people could never tolerate even for a day."
Responses from Other Politicians
A Democrat representative from Texas stated on online platforms, "Honestly … I was surprised, but the risks that are associated with being on the opposite side of Trump are genuine!"
The move created waves through American politics. A Republican political strategist called it "a major surprise."
"Maybe she's looking at future plans," the strategist added.
Potential Future Moves and Supporters
Greene may have an ally in a Democratic representative who worked with her to enact the bill to release the files related to the offenses of the financier.
"MTG is probably to be a formidable 2028 candidate," the congressman stated. "Her positions on the case, on managing AI, and opposition to war are more in touch with the base than other figures."
A politician from Georgia is prepared to take Greene's position. He called on his followers in a post on online platforms on Friday, stating, "As you've likely heard that Marjorie Taylor Greene has declared her departure starting the specified date. Get ready Georgia! Teachers, agricultural workers, former service members, all citizens, I require your backing."
