Torrential Downpours Worsen Situation for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, UN Warn
Persistent storms over the past week have intensified the already dire living conditions of the hundreds of thousands of uprooted residents in the Gaza Strip, as stated by aid groups.
"Terrible" Conditions Poses Severe Dangers
A spokesman described the recent storm as "horrendous", with rain so severe that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the terrain.
"The recent weather was truly difficult for the families. The storms were so powerful... And the winds were so strong," stated the spokesperson.
There is grave concern that minors residing in makeshift shelters in wet clothing will contract hypothermia and other illnesses.
Fatalities and Significant Loss
Medical officials have confirmed that one baby has died from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have been killed in roof cave-ins triggered by the severe weather.
Additional accounts put a increased fatality count. Authorities reported that multiple residential buildings had fully given way and many others had been partly destroyed.
