Top Television Picks: Seven Must-Watch Movies This Coming Week

Top Selection

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching critique examines the demanding standards for female beauty and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired performance in the role of Elisabeth, an aging actress forced into presenting a workout series on television. Edged out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome procedure known as "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes Keira Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from covering global conflict to join a luxury cruise alongside an ailing wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, and other filthy rich passengers. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and everyone denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries with this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic celebrity called Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong even without a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has made the local kids on edge. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he dreads the worst. However, the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, on Film4

Black Bag

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a intelligence thriller as tight like the turtlenecks worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars excel of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
