TikTok Grants Users Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-made content appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features more than 1 billion AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This development coincides with a surge in AI-generated material, driven by emerging content generation software.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing video streams on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or bizarre.

Our research shows that many people like content made with AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we aim to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its network identified as artificially created. In total, more than 100 million media items are uploaded to the service every day, making clips made by AI a minor portion of its total content library.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI content they see by accessing the topic control setting in the platform and choosing “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be controlled under the filter cover politics, fashion, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s policies mandate users to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.

Furthermore, the service will from now on add an “AI-made” label to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an collaborative effort for recognizing artificial media. This measure is designed to stop users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also establishing a $2m educational fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about ethical AI use. This program will assist charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, during controversy over plans to lay off a large number of content moderators in the UK. The company is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection department in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by removing the most distressing content ahead of it has to be seen by humans. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by human moderators over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
