The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
