Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of Vecna. The search for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to gain strength.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
