The England national team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the anticipated passage for a tournament staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.

City’s stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions game since May 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The team are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win their group, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Championship Launch and Demonstration

The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were heckled as they approached the site by around fifty activists, who called for the Israeli team to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.

Banners were displayed with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Schedule

The opening game of the European Championship will be held at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will include Wales if they secure a place.

Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5pm.

It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will cater to households and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.

All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that do not reach the tournament through the standard process.

Venues and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.

The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on 6 December 2026.
