New research indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
