Cameron Norrie achieved the most important win of his career by rallying from a lost first set to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory signifies Norrie's maiden win over a current world No 1.

"Massive. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest British man in history to overcome a world No 1. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the first round of qualifiers here. I just sought to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant win of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the strongest player in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine finals in a row and 17 successive premier event successes, which represented the finest stretch of results in the young champion's early professional path.

The top seed appeared to be moving confidently to a win early on as he cruised past the opening set. Yet, Norrie gradually fought his way back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and engaging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, demanding points. His persistent shot tolerance and reliability steadily took its toll.

For much of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he struggled badly to find his timing with his rally strokes. The young star appeared notably uneasy executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the game for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie presented Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his steadiness, athleticism and power throughout while delivering effective serves and picking his spots to advance into the court and strike effectively.

Career Context

After dealing for months due to a serious arm issue and challenges with his game, Norrie dropped as low as No 91 this year. Following appearances in the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 after that, this victory reinforces the experienced player's progress as he attempts to return to the elite rankings and even higher. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his remarkable success, is still hasn't figure out how to produce his top form in indoor conditions.
