Must A Dearest Friend Halt Trying to Set Me Up on Romantic Outings?

In this private predicament, two friends share their viewpoints on companionship, pressure, and the value of staying unattached.

The Case Against: Haile

“I’m being portrayed as a lonely soul, yet I am perfectly content by myself. I’m uninterested in seeing people right now.”

I am not against romance. I have been in relationships, yet right now I am the only single pal in my girls group and I feel I'm being handled as a pathetic situation.

I lack the desire in going on dates currently, notably after ending things with someone a year ago. Yet my best friend, Whitney, continually advises me to jump back on the horse. I know she's only showing concern for me, but sometimes I think it's more about about what suits her than what’s right for me.

Whitney excels in relationships. One could call her I’d call a serial dater. As soon as one romance finishes, another is waiting in the wings. But I, conversely, am fine on my own. I ended things with my ex since we had become disconnected. He was only my second boyfriend. It was difficult initially, yet subsequently I began to enjoy my own company again. This marks the first time in a long while when I’ve felt genuinely serene, with zero concessions.

Whitney mentioned she desires me to date so I can be further involved in her life. She loves hosting romantic duo gatherings. Yet duos are hardly the exclusive group who can participate in dinner parties.

Additionally, there is the complete kids conversation. She will make comments such as: “Don’t leave it for too much time, Haile.” I think it’s because I previously mentioned I wanted kids with my ex, although it's unclear now?

Perhaps the reason is we’re from quite Christian east African families. Yet we're both 28 and I receive a sufficient dose of this from my mom. I have no need for it from a close associate also, although it is with good intentions.

Currently, it seems I’ve switched off the part of my thought process allocated to romance. I am uncertain if ever it will switch back on, or whether I even want it to.

I do not wish to see a person just because it’s convenient, and I don’t need saving. I love my loved ones, however if I listen to a single additional soul inquire, “What is the status of your romantic situation?” I am going to lose it. For what reason must those who are solo perpetually be required to account for their choices?

I don’t see being single as residing in a waiting room. It is a decision.

The Case For: Whitney

“Haile shines brightest during times she is in love. I’m glad she has attained peace, but I am concerned she is sealing herself off.”

My friendship with Haile from the time we were 16, therefore I have observed her at her happiest, namely when she’s in love. After her breakup, she went through a difficult period and currently she has become overly autonomous, which isn’t great, to my mind. She possesses her own place and car, and states: “Why would I need a partner for?” However I recollect how joyful she was during the time she was looked after by her ex. I am pleased she has discovered peace now, and I admire that she is now so independent, however at times I believe she’s confusing familiarity with contentment.

It’s true that I used to be a perpetual romantic, however now I am in a joyful union. I long for Haile to experience this also, since in that event we can go out more. Her ex proved to be great pals with my existing beau, and it simply rendered everything better for everyone. I invited Haile to one of my previous evening meals, however she said she did not wish to attend since she wouldn’t know anyone.

When I said Haile would gain in social settings from having a partner, My aim was not to imply that she isn't enough on her own – My point was simply that I yearn to see observing her socially engaging and enjoying herself. I arranged dates with a few shared acquaintances since I believed she would perhaps appreciate it. I acknowledge that it might have caused her to feel pressured.

Furthermore my statement about kids originated in worry, not criticism. I am aware she wants children eventually, as we spoke about that growing up, and she recently talked about it when she was with her ex. Maybe I insist too strongly since I recognize she’s worth so much.

If she is authentically happy on her own, in that case certainly I must honor that. My only wish is for her to experience the finest existence. I do get that it can be frustrating for those who are solo to be questioned about their {love lives|rom
