Ahead of marking his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

A Look Back: From Appointment to Present

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an cup win within months. But, that early success remains his sole top-tier trophy after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal met the day after his appointment was announced.

League Position and Pressure

With chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

The manager currently has 18 months remaining on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that results must come sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, emphasizing the ongoing need to validate his position. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team heads into the upcoming game dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to keep him out for several weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
