Miami's Eileen Higgins Voted In as Inaugural Democratic Mayor of the City of Miami in Three Decades.

Democratic candidate Eileen Higgins has triumphed in the Miami mayoral race in the state of Florida, marking the historic occasion a Democrat has achieved this in almost three decades.

A former county commissioner, Higgins prevailed in the runoff by earning fifty-nine percent of the votes, defeating her Republican opponent Emilio Gonzalez, who was endorsed by former President Trump and got around 41% of the vote, according to election data.

"The city selected a different path... you chose steady leadership over disorder," remarked the mayor-elect to supporters.

Higgins' win adds to a series of recent wins for the Democratic Party.

A Pioneering Victory on Multiple Fronts

With her win, Higgins, 61 years old, also becomes the initial woman to be elected to the post, as noted by media outlets.

Higgins commented her victory "heralds the commencement of the task before us" and vowed to tackle the issues Miami still faces.

"We will lead a city that serves every citizen," she continued.

Election Platform and Difference with Trump

Running on platform points including immigration and cost-effective homes, she worked to distinguish her leadership style against that of President Trump.

In a recent discussion, Higgins said: "We have very different outlooks on how we should approach our community members, a large portion of whom are immigrants."

During the Miami mayoral debate, she called the administration's immigration policies "unjust and harsh."

She committed to work with the Trump administration on matters where they can identify shared goals, but "when we disagree, I'll speak out," she said.

Political Backing and the Election Path

Despite the race being officially non-partisan, Higgins received the backing of a number of notable party leaders, including ex-cabinet official Pete Buttigieg.

Besides the President's support, Gonzalez was also backed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Higgins now succeeds former mayor Francis Suarez, who attempted a run for the GOP presidential nomination.

In the run-up to Higgins' victory, the Democratic Party secured key successes in the first major elections of the President's new term recently.
