Los Angeles Battles Unprecedented Heat Just Days Following Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of significant rainfall that led to inundation across areas in the city, LA is now confronting unseasonably high weather for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Heat
During the day Friday, the thermometer climbed to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by the National Weather Service. This breaks the old record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on NWS maps for the region.
Safety Warnings
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Not leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sudden spike in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that struck the area earlier in the week. That system delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, leading to mudslide risks for millions residents.
Sadly, the conditions also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead cooler conditions is expected. Temperatures were forecast to fall to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by Friday night.
Several cities that experienced ninety degrees were Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to experience the high eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate weather in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the following week.
