The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
