Fury Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Backlash
Figures from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his political party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the killing of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
