Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he became known as a beloved figure who popularised classical music for a vast audience.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the 1960s and 70s was marked by critically praised work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
He also launched the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a showcase that discovered talents such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
