Diane Ladd, Known For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at the Age of 89.

The Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us aged 89.

This star, whose roles featured Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was shared via an announcement shared by her daughter, Academy Award-winning star her daughter Laura Dern.

Laura Dern, who appeared with Diane Ladd in a number of films including Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my wonderful hero and my profound gift as a mother”, stating that she was present as she died.

“She was an exceptional daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist as well as caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Initial Roles and Major Success

The start of her career featured small roles on television series such as The Fugitive whereas the seventies featured her performing next to actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

That very year, 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

During the eighties, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow, a suspense story as well as funny follow-up Christmas Vacation and appeared on the show Alice, a sitcom based on the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she was given an additional supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her role in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mother of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. The next year she was awarded another nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie that also featured Dern.

“This was the film which Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she brought us to England for a royal premiere and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and weeping, seeing us act.”

That decade included parts in humorous films The Cemetery Club reuniting her with Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Dern’s mother once more. Those years also earned her TV award nominations for roles in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She continued to star with Laura Dern in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and Mike White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen alongside actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her more recent television parts featured Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

She additionally penned and directed the comedy film Mrs Munck, a film that included herself and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a movie. Indeed, I am the sole female in history who directed her former husband. I often joke: ‘I say ladies, if you want revenge, guide your former spouse.’ However, I’m joking.”

Personal Connections

Ladd was also the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.

During 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a respiratory illness and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery when her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.

“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering like a sore or something, rather utilize it to investigate, to illuminate the way for personal and collective growth, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
