Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has described the circumstances as a "total shambles," speaking earlier today.

Speaking during a broadcast interview, he pointed to remarks made by David Lammy after a recent inmate discharge, saying that Lammy would implement stricter checks.

"It took six days for the prison service reportedly to realize this has happened" and inform the police, Jenrick says, "who are now a week behind in the search to locate him."

The shadow minister criticises the minister's performance during yesterday's PMQs and alleges him of a "total dereliction of duty."

Addressing incorrect inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "each mistaken discharge [...] is unforgivable."

He admits there were such releases under the previous Conservative government, but claims the figure "has increased dramatically" under the current government.

Calling for additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he adds: "What the British people want to see now are adequate checks implemented."

"This represents a particular administrative failure by the justice department overseen by the minister," Jenrick says.
