Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious over the fact that Paul Biya has secured an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has declared that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he provoked "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of 4 protesters have been killed during confrontations between law enforcement and protesters since the electoral process on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth presidential mandate.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he was the true winner, a claim disputed by the governing party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on protesters have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union demanding restraint.

Official's Claims

Earlier this week, the interior minister accused Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he described as "unlawful" rallies leading to the loss of lives, and also condemned him for declaring victory in the election.

He added that the opposition leader's "accomplices involved in an subversive plot" will also undergo judicial processes.

Vote Outcome

The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, won the October 12 election with a majority of the votes, compared to 35.2% for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is has not yet commented to the official announcement to bring him to court, but he had previously declared that he would not accept a fraudulent outcome - and that he was not afraid of being taken into custody.

Following the vote count, he reported that security forces shot on protesters present near his residence in Garoua, causing the death of at least two individuals.

Inquiry Announced

Earlier this week, the government official disclosed that an probe would be started into clashes before and after the announcement of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he commented, without offering a exact count of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that multiple members of the security forces also suffered major harm.

Ongoing Circumstances

While Nji maintained the situation throughout Cameroon was now manageable, protesters continue to protest in some parts of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators mounted obstructions on Tuesday, and burnt tyres on the thoroughfares.

Observers caution that the political turmoil could lead the nation into a political crisis.
