The British administration is being called upon to "step up" and cover the £24.5 million cost incurred during recent trips by Donald Trump and Vice-President Vance to Scotland, according to a top Scottish minister.

Significant Estimated Expenses Revealed

Preliminary expenses totalling nearly £24.5 million for the two official trips have been made public by the administration in Edinburgh.

Ivan McKee labeled the UK government's unwillingness to provide funding as "ridiculous," stating that both visits were clearly official, noting that the US president held discussions with European Union chief the EU's von der Leyen and British PM Keir Starmer during his summer stay in the northern nation.

Details of the Trips and Related Policing Costs

The former president toured his golfing resorts at Turnberry in Ayrshire and Menie in Aberdeenshire over a five-day period in the summer, while American VP Vance spent around a long weekend in Ayrshire in late summer.

In a formal letter to the Treasury’s chief secretary James Murray, Scotland’s finance secretary wrote that the trips placed "significant strains and costs on Scottish public services, especially the Scottish police force."

The Edinburgh administration estimates that the estimated expense for securing the presidential visit alone was £21m, which reflected maximum daily assignments of over four thousand police, while expenses for the VP's visit were approximately £3m.

Large-Scale Security Mission

This extensive policing operation was the biggest in Scotland since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and involved regional police, national divisions, special constables and wider UK colleagues for expert assistance.

The Finance Secretary stated: "Following your decision not to offer financial support to Scotland for expenses accrued in relation to the trip of Donald Trump to the nation in summer 2025 and the subsequent trip of Vice-President Vance, I am contacting you to request that you review this stance and provide full reimbursement for the expense of the visits."

Westminster Response and Past Precedent

The UK government stated that the visits were private and "not official UK government business." A representative commented: "Holyrood are responsible for policing costs in the country as per established devolved funding arrangements."

While the Finance Secretary pointed to previous precedent where the British administration covered the expense of the president's 2018 trip to the nation, it is believed that visit came after a formal UK government invitation, in which instance it included protection expenses under its statement of funding policy.

"The UK government needs to step up and cover the cost. I think it’s ridiculous, it was obviously a official trip … Particularly when you have the prime minister Keir Starmer meeting with Donald Trump, having press conferences with them, conducting international business with them, its really hard to believe to say this was merely a personal vacation."
