British and French Jets Attack Below-Ground Islamic State Weapons Store in the Syrian Desert

Through a combined operation, jets from the UK and France have targeted an underground complex in Syria previously used by IS.

Information on the Joint Strike

The mission occurred on Saturday evening in a hilly terrain close to the archaeological site of the city of Palmyra.

Laser-guided bombs were utilized to sever the access tunnels leading to the site.

“Initial indications suggest the objective was effectively neutralized,” stated a official communiqué.

Forces Deployed

Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes performed the attack, supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker to allow for longer missions.

Suspected Use of the Site

This below-ground structure is assessed as having been utilized as the storage of weapons and explosives.

Officials stated the adjacent region was absent of civilians at the moment of the attack.

Official Statements of Intent

A senior defence official emphasized the nation's determination to work closely together with our allies” in order to prevent any resurgence” of ISIS.

Appreciation was shown to the armed forces personnel who took part in the strike, which aimed to “eliminate violent extremists who threaten our way of life.”

Ongoing Efforts

Coalition warplanes have been conducting surveillance missions over parts of Syria to deter a renewed activity of the Islamist militant group that held sway over swathes of land in the nation up until 2019.
