Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
