An Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book lodging after getting there, yet once I got there, a major event was happening and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found that airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. Not knowing how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the night in an establishment that stayed open 24/7. This was not ideal at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more folks with such compassion.

I must have looked confused since a young woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if everything was alright. I shared my predicament and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one of the sandwiches she had taken home her evening job. I had access to the bathroom and a protected spot and secure to sleep.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a young woman inviting a guy she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did go to ANU, and I lost touch with her again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of human compassion. I hope karma has returned her good deed abundantly. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
